Task: You need to make a creatively folded leaflet with visually striking graphics telling the story of four styles in graphic design from 1950-1980. You will use your own content (text and images) to create an interesting timeline or infographic to illustrate the various periods and styles in graphic design.
Those four periods were: International Typographic Style/Swiss Style, Pop Art Style, Psychedelic Poster Style, and New Wave/Punk Style. Each of these four periods will get a few lines of information, as well as some artists/designers from that style, mentioned and explained.
I first learned the history, then I came up with some fold ideas. I first thought of an origami frog, then a paper airplane, then those fancy tissue artworks on cruise ships, then finally I thought of a new fold.
I looked at the Noroff logo and saw the potential for a brochure fold that doesn´t waste paper space and sections of info. Plus, it’s something even I can fold so it is efficient to make en-masse. Also, since it is The Graphic Design Department at Noroff that wants the brochure it makes sense to have the brochure folded in the way the logo looks.
History Info
| Period | Info |
|---|---|
| International Typographic Style/Swiss Style | This is a type of design that started in Russia, Germany, and the Netherlands. It then got refined in Switzerland and focused on information clarity. The social events that triggered this style was World War 2 and the need to easily get the message across easily. The style is recognizable by its order, sans serif font, and the large amount of space their images take. The style is also known for using a large headline in comparison to the body text. |
| Pop Art Style | The Pop Art style has two main sides, the American and the British one. The American one emerged out of defiance for the typical art by making things impersonal. The British one was more affected by the end of World War 2, and the art style was more academic and referenced American popular culture from afar. The art style is known for abruptly changing or transitioning color, all while having strong and contrasting colors to “pop” out. The art style is also known for depicting everyday things or realistic people, like a comic book. |
| Psychedelic Poster Style | The Psychedelic Poster style was created after World War 2 in a time when consuming drugs, like hallucinogens, was the new “Thing”. The design style reflected that, and the Hippie culture in America. Very much Anti-War. The style was colorful, fluid, free and went directly against the clear and orderly Swiss Style. It is meant to be dazzling. |
| New Wave/Punk Style | The New Wave, or the Punk style was created when some Swiss designers wanted to break out of the rigid and structural mold of the design popular at that time. The new period in graphic design was inspired by the freedom of expression from the 1960 USA. The design style is recognizable by the use of photography, and the look of elements being cut out and glued together in an erratic way with more than one layer. The text is broken up and doesn´t stick to one type of font. The style is playful, youthful, and expressive. |
