Course Assignment 00: Graphic Design 2 Introduction

My third semester in my two-year Graphic Design study is upon me and for the introduction week, I have been given an assignment.

Description: Create an artwork using discarded and recycled material. It can be anything. There’s no size limit. You can build art for ants or make a hat for the nearest mountain. The sky is literally the limit. Your artwork can be 2D or 3D. Once you are finished, you need to take a picture of your artwork.

You need to include a short and clear artist’s statement of no more than 400 words. Research other written artists’ statements. These statements are commonly used to complement and explain pieces of art. It needs to be highly reflective and concisely written. Optional: Document your process with photographs and videos (using the timelapse function on your phone is an easy way to do this). Combine your footage in any basic video editing app. Upload it to Dropbox, YouTube, TikTok or any online platform you prefer, and include a link on the second page of your submission. There are no specific requirements for this.

I was a bit stumped on what to do for this assignment but I have lots of simple bamboos and wooden chopsticks and cutlery so maybe those will be of use. My mother and I have kept all those “throw-away” bamboo chopsticks and forks from takeaway food we have bought over… I don´t even know for how long, but it is ages worth of cutlery accumulating dust. So they would make a nice birdhouse. Though I don´t know how to make birdhouses out of chopsticks.

OR I might make a contraption for bird feeding. I just found out that my mother has kept all tin cans from goat cheese and other canning. I like this idea since metal recycling can sometimes be a pain to do since the recycling place is in a place I never go, so now I get the chance to give the cans new life.

I wound up using the metal cans and a rock to weigh them down so that my bird-feeding nooks don´t fly off in bad weather.

My mother filmed me while I spray-painted three smaller cans, so a timelapse video was be added to my assignment. I also took some pictures to show how I traveled and how the process went. My original sketch of how it would look got scrapped when I had the materials at hand and I realized it would not become an artwork but just some cans and a rock. So, the final design is a bit different from the sketch shown in the slideshow below.

Here is a time-lapse Youtube Video of what I did to create the artwork: Pyramid Birdfeeding (5min)

The magpies like my new feeding platform. They constantly check if there is more food.
