Question 2 will be posted tomorrow… becuase I forgot it. Oops. Shame on me. Looks like I will be doing tasks during Easter.
Question 1 – Written assignment
- Name three lighting sources and their functions.
- Name two light modifiers and explain the difference between them.
- Draw a diagram of and describe the three-point lighting setup.
Backlight, key light, and fill light, are the three types of light sources normally used in studio photography. Backlight is self-explanatory. It is light coming from the back (often at an angle and not right behind) The backlight can help make the hair look nice etc.
Fill light is the light beside the camera that is filling in shadows so that it is as dramatic or undramatic as the photographer wants it to be.
Key light is the “leader light” whose job is to put light on the sub/object. It decides the highlights and shadows, the light source is also usually placed 45* away from the camera.
Those silvery headlights or umbrellas in studios are light modifiers. They help spread the light over the sub/object.

The three lights have a job each. The backlight makes f.eks hair look good. Fill light fills shadows. The key light is the main light that decides how strong the light is.
Question 2 – Research assignment
- Draw three studio setups for the following subject matters and list all the equipment you would use to light your subjects:
- Portrait;
- Fashion;
- Beauty.
- In a magazine or on the internet, find one fashion shot, a beauty shot, and a portrait shot, and explain how you think the lighting was set up in each shot.
